Literature today

Asia is working on a final essay for the play Our Town.


Cody, Gabe and Austin are working on an original play written in the style of Our Town.




Sue and her group (Kelsea, Charles and Emily) are reading about the Titanic in a Dear America Novel.

Travis and Brandon (minus Nathan) are listening to My Suffering in Africa on CD, with Mr. Dirk.

Projects with Southern Roots

Thomas did a model of a Civil War battle.

Austin did an Alligator (with a jet pack?).
Gabe wrote a Blues song, and Dirk helped out.

Travis did a model of Pres. Lincoln.
Cody did a Lincoln inspired model and presentation.
Brandon drew a cannon.
Matt made a working gallows.
Asia gathered old family reciepes into a cookbook, since her grandmother is not only from the Deep South, but also a caterer.

Colonial Menu

All the kids randomly drew recipes from the book Revolutionary Recipes, Colonial Food, Lore and More by Patricia B.Mitchell.

The menu for our meal:
Buckwheat Cakes (we ended up putting the Brown Betty over these)

I think most of them were suprised by how similar these foods are to their favorite comfort foods. The ginger bread and marblehead pudding were the strongest flavors because they were not used to molasses, over all the meal was a huge success.

Air Pressure Experiment

Color the water to make it easier to see.
Put a candle in the water.
Light the candle.
Cover with a tall glass or jar.
Record observations.


If you did it right, the water rises inside the jar, because the candle burned up all the oxygen and the pressure had to equalize by drawing in the water.

Ongoing Projects...

Emily is working a different puzzle each day with the goal of being able to complete a 100 piece puzzle in less than 30 minutes by the end of three weeks.


Gabriel is composing a musical score for the screenplay Cody is writing.


Josh is drawing three sets of President and First Lady portraits.


Sue is finding out about how the local government mirrors the federal government, then figuring out how to present that information.



Austin is building a detailed diaroma of a Native American Village.


Earl is creating a painting of the Capitol Building. Here is is working on enlarging and getting his spacing right.

Separating Molecules into Atoms

This experiment uses electricity and baking soda to separate water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Once separated the oxygen rebonds with the copper and the water to create a new molecule, commonly refered to as Patina.
